Introduction to  PhilouKaren

This site serves as an archive of the photography of Cambodia by Paul Badié. These images were taken from 1996 through the current year, 2013.  From film to digital, the photographs capture his homeland, Cambodia, during these trans-formative years – family and friends, countryside and city, markets and pagodas, infrastructure and society.

Why PhilouKaren?

In all of the khmer schools one will find a panel representing the spiritual and educational hierarchy in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In the reception area of the PhilouKaren School in prior years,
were portraits of King Sihanouk and Queen Monique followed by the portraits of your servant Philou and his wife Karen and those of school’s directors and teachers.

Our current king is called Siha, the beginning of Sihanouk + Moni the beginning of Monique. Siha + Moni = Sihamoni.

In my story, Paul Badié is the one who lives abroad. The family prefers his native name: Philou. And as he returns, we will not, immediately, cut in it two, it's too early. Therefore, Philou will be adopted in its entirety. And Karen who has only been taken hostage, will also be adopted in its entirety. Philou + Karen = Philoukaren.

- This is an absolute naivety!
It is even embarrassing and sometimes it injures.

But do not worry, the little you die does not last long.
We finish by adopting. The proof is in the name of this site.
